Within the last decade, Brian Donnelly—the artist better known as KAWS—has transformed from a tagger who charmed the entire streetwear industry into a millions-making fine artist sought after by luxury fashion labels, prestigious galleries, and heavy-hitting auctioneers alike. His artwork made the leap from Supreme skate decks and tees to Dior sweaters and handbags. (Not to mention: one of his paintings sold for a record-setting $14.8 million—and the buyer was heavily rumored to be Justin Bieber.) One longtime collaborator that has remained constant throughout his rocket-like ascent is Comme des Garçons. And now, the two have reunited to produce the artist’s first-ever fragrance, complete with a high-design bottle adorned with one of the artist’s most famous characters.
The musky floral scent, dubbed “Mirror,” features notes of turmeric leaves, neroli oil, orange blossom, and rich woody cashmeran. "Inspired by KAWS's multi-faceted practice," reads the official press release, without much further explanation. It's fair to assume that the bottle is the real draw of the collaboration. The translucent glass design features the artist's beloved "Companion" character—or more specifically, the character seemingly drowning in a puddle of blood, with its hands just above the surface. The fragrance will be available on October 14 via Comme des Garçons, Dover Street Market, and some select boutiques worldwide.
In 2021 alone, KAWS will count brand collaborations with Nike and Sacai, Supreme, Human Made, and Porter. "For me," he told GQ in a 2019 profile, "It's all the same thing—there's no difference between any of the projects I do." Over the years, the artist has lent his name and artwork to apparel, accessories, toys and figurines, sunglasses, sneakers, tea kettles, and even augmented reality apps. (All while showing his larger-than-life sculptures and building a feverish demand for his paintings.) In some ways, it feels almost surprising that he's never produced a signature fragrance before. A decade ago, it would have felt unfathomable for a graffiti artist to be collaborating on a cologne with a fashion label. Yet, in today's collab-driven and merch-centric retail environment, it feels par for the course. And you can thank KAWS for that.
